Language plan
Choose the degree, field, and route that determine the reference need for Japanese and English.
Enter current Japanese and English levels plus the months remaining to measure the broad gap.
Fixed rules return need bands, study-time ranges, and typical exam months without reading other tools.
Check the program's current requirements, then place confirmed exam and review dates on your timeline.
Estimate preparation from your goal and current language levels.
You need to move from None up to the ~N2 estimate.
Estimated study time to get there: about 11–22 months
With your 18 months, it's tight — you can make it if you plan carefully.
Optional English isn't required to apply (recommended in some fields).
The hard part isn't which band you reach — it's the logistics that trip people up: who runs the test, what it measures, whether one can stand in for another, registration windows, how long results take, when the school actually receives them, and how validity interacts with application windows. Everything here is a guideline; sittings, fees, rules, validity and delivery change every year and by school and body.
JEES's 2026 guidance for the JLPT in Japan states it is, in principle, for non-native Japanese speakers who are mid-to-long-term residents or special permanent residents under Japan's residency system. So the target group is mid-to-long-term residents and special permanent residents — "pop over to Japan and sit the JLPT on a short stay" can no longer be your default plan (verify the exact rules and whether a residence-card number is required at info.jees-jlpt.jp / my.jees-jlpt.jp).
Without that status, find an official test site where you can register.
Decide your target first; that tells you which exam axis matters. Undergrad = EJU Japanese; graduate = whatever the graduate school specifies (JLPT/English/interview); language school = JLPT/in-house test/J.TEST/NAT; work = JLPT and BJT.
| Target route | Exam axis to watch first | Can't substitute with | Common add-ons | Most common trip-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate (taught in Japanese) | EJU Japanese + Math/Science/General (as the school specifies) | JLPT N1 as a blanket replacement for EJU | Some schools also require English | Usable EJU sittings don't cover the application window |
| Graduate (taught in Japanese) | As the graduate school specifies; often English + JLPT/in-house Japanese + interview | "I have N1" as proof the oral exam will be fine | Research plan / interview / in-house test | Drilling for the test while neglecting output and the interview |
| Language school / some vocational | JLPT / in-house test / J.TEST / NAT, etc. (varies by school) | Generalising "one school accepts an alternative" to "all do" | Interview / attendance rate / entry timing | Using an alternative certificate to apply to mainstream undergrad |
| Work / business / residency points | JLPT and BJT are more common | BJT in place of EJU for undergraduate applications | Interview / practical communication | Assuming a business-Japanese cert covers an academic entrance exam |
The JLPT doesn't directly test speaking or writing output (per its official CEFR note: it covers language knowledge / reading / listening, not speaking/writing/interaction). So N1 ≠ can speak/write ≠ can handle a graduate oral exam. Pass = total score meets the pass mark AND each section meets its sectional pass mark (fail one section and you fail, even with a high total).
| Dimension | EJU Japanese | JLPT |
|---|---|---|
| Run by | JASSO | JF + JEES |
| Core purpose | Japanese / academic-readiness assessment for international students entering universities (academic Japanese) | General Japanese-proficiency certification |
| Role in undergrad applications | Often the main axis | Not always; many faculties won't take N1 in place of EJU |
| Writing (output) | Yes (essay 0–50; universities may collect the answer) | No |
| Scoring | Point-based (Japanese 0–400 + essay 0–50) [guide] | Pass/fail + per-section scores |
| Sittings per year [guide] | Twice: June / November | In Japan, twice: July / December |
Rule of thumb: for undergrad, first check whether your target school needs EJU Japanese and which subjects. For graduate, don't assume EJU is useful — first check whether the graduate school looks at JLPT / English / interview / research plan (and graduate schools aren't "JLPT only" either).
These fill gaps in frequency and practicality. "There is data on schools that use it" ≠ "your target school accepts it right now." For any formal use, go back to the target school's latest admission guidelines.
| Test | Run by | Character | Sittings [guide] | Mainland China [verify] | Typical use | Relation to JLPT/EJU |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| J.TEST (Practical Japanese Test) | J.TEST Secretariat | Practical Japanese / heavy on listening; A–C and D–E include writing | 6 times a year | Has a mainland secretariat | Companies / some schools / language schools / progress tracking | A high-frequency practical thermometer, not an EJU substitute |
| NAT-TEST | Senmon Kyoiku Shuppan | Modeled on the JLPT; Level 5 ≈ N5 | 6 times a year | Venues in Beijing, Shanghai, Dalian, Qingdao, Fuqing, etc. | JLPT prep / some schools / some residency procedures | A JLPT-style high-frequency alternative, not an EJU substitute |
| BJT (Business Japanese Proficiency Test) | Kanken Association (Pearson VUE CBT) | Business communication; 0–800 points, J5–J1+ (not pass/fail) | High frequency by CBT booking | Has a China-site entry point | Employment / business proof / some highly-skilled-professional points | Business/residency-leaning; should not replace EJU Japanese for undergrad |
Three things matter: whether the registration window has closed, whether you can grab a venue city, and whether the school can receive and accept your result before the deadline after scores come out.
| Test | Sittings [guide] | Mainland China | Result lead time [guide] | Separate "school receives" step? | Biggest trap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JLPT | Twice in Japan: Jul/Dec | On the mainland, register via the NEEA platform | Results online first, mailed later (varies by sitting) | Usually you submit the result/certificate yourself (not TOEFL-style auto-send) | Venues can fill even within the window; you can't pick the exact venue; 2026 residency rule |
| EJU | Twice: Jun/Nov | 2026 overseas-venue page shows no mainland cities [verify] | Published roughly a month-plus after the exam [guide] | Schools use scores via JASSO's score-reference system | Assuming "if I can't get to Japan I can sit EJU on the mainland anytime" |
| TOEFL iBT | Year-round | Follow ETS guidance via NEEA | A few days to your account [guide] | Yes; allow several days to ~two weeks for sending | Seeing the score in your account ≠ the school has received it |
| IELTS | Frequent | Check the official search | A few days for the computer-based test [guide] | Often needs e-delivery / result verification | From mid-2026, the move to computer-based is advancing |
| TOEIC L&R | Monthly in Japan | Acceptance of mainland sittings needs separate checking [verify] | Online → digital → paper, each staggered [guide] | Official reporting may need a separate request | Many schools don't treat TOEIC as the main English application axis |
| BJT | High frequency (CBT) | Has a China-site entry point | Paper score on leaving; certificate printable a few days later [guide] | Depends on the school | Fast to issue ≠ broadly usable; often useless for undergrad applications |
The real trip-ups are in the back half: the December JLPT is simply too late for autumn early-round applications; even within the window venues can close early and you can't pick the exact prefecture venue; for English tests, choose a date early and register well ahead, and get official scores to the school well before the deadline.
What the testing body calls "valid" and the "usable sittings / delivery window" the school sets are two different things. Apply to several schools at once and you can get blocked by each one's different rules.
| Test | Body-level validity [guide] | What you should verify |
|---|---|---|
| JLPT | No TOEFL-style blanket 2-year rule; it's a certificate-type proof | Whether the school wants "the level" or "a level certificate from the last few years" |
| EJU | School-side score reference/confirmation is, as a guide, valid for 2 years from the exam date | Which EJU sittings are accepted by your school and major |
| TOEFL/IELTS/TOEIC/DET | Roughly 2 years (note: some bodies won't accept older IELTS) | The test-date window the school accepts and the delivery method |
| BJT | The score certificate has no fixed expiry | "No expiry" ≠ accepted by every school |
Work backwards: admission-guideline requirements → delivery method → result speed → that sitting's registration window and venue (for the JLPT in Japan, add the 2026 residency-status condition). "Usable EJU sittings" and "how recent the JLPT certificate is" are often two different logics.
What was standard where you lived before may not apply in Japan. Check early to avoid registration and application problems.
| Pre-arrival assumption | Japan reality | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You can register anytime and test nearby | Many have fixed registration windows; the JLPT in Japan can fill within the window and you can't pick the venue | Work backwards from the official window |
| Having N1 = Japanese is sorted | The JLPT doesn't test speaking/writing | Prepare separately for the graduate interview / oral exam |
| One Japanese certificate covers everything | EJU and JLPT serve different purposes, and alternatives vary even more by school | Don't use N1 for EJU, and don't treat J.TEST as a pass to mainstream undergrad |
| Scores out = the school already has them | For TOEFL/IELTS there are two stages: "scores out" and "official report reaches the school" | Watch for materials still showing incomplete in the system |
| Scores are usable forever | EJU has school-side usable sittings, English is often 2 years, and schools set their own windows | Applying to several schools at once can get blocked by different rules |
| Just go to Japan first and test there | The 2026 JLPT in Japan has a new residency-status condition | Short-stay testing may not be available; first check sites in your country or region, or another location whose rules you meet |
| My country or region must have a test site | Overseas sites vary by exam and year, and JLPT and EJU cover different locations | Check official sites and eligibility before building your timeline |
Official test bodies tell you "how it works," not "whether they'll accept your sitting this time" — that always goes back to the target school's admission guidelines.

Five levels N1–N5 (N1 = top/advanced; N2 ≈ upper-intermediate). Held twice a year in Japan and many countries, typically the first Sundays of July and December. In Japan you register online (JEES, info.jees.or.jp); results post online about two months later.
From 2026, sitting the JLPT in Japan is reported to require residency status (a residence-card number); short-term visitors may not be eligible (please verify).
Used mainly for undergraduate admission, held twice a year, typically June and November. Subjects are Japanese, Science (physics/chemistry/biology), General/Social Studies and Math; universities specify which you need. For non-Japanese subjects you choose a Japanese- or English-language question booklet at application.
Weighting, required subjects and how scores are used differ by university and faculty and are revised yearly.
TOEFL iBT can be taken year-round and scores are valid about two years; IELTS has many test dates and can be taken frequently. For English degrees (SGU/G30), IELTS 6.0–6.5 / TOEFL iBT 80–90 is one common guide.
Which tests are accepted (e.g., the Duolingo English Test) and the minimum score vary by program — verify for each school. Make sure your score is within its validity window.
For JLPT in Japan, you choose a test city/area at registration and the organizer assigns the specific venue (unlike picking an exact test center abroad). Seats in popular cities like Tokyo fill fast, so register as soon as the window opens.
Registration open/close dates and the choice of test areas change each year; JEES and other official sites publish the latest.
Language plans die of inflated baselines and of mistaking enrollment for studying. Test your real level, back-plan from the sitting, and schedule only what survives a bad week.
A felt 'roughly N3' is noise; one timed mock gives you a number to plan on.
JLPT runs July and December; the monthly rhythm has no anchor until you pick one.
Classes plus part-time work is the norm — two daily hours last, four last a week.
Grammar-and-vocab-only plans lose on listening in the hall and speaking in interviews. Weight your weak skills.
Programs may want N1, an English score, or both — don't train the wrong subject.
One buffer week per month; when behind, cut scope, never cadence — drop content, keep the habit.
