However, there are few studies on the effects of EF treatment on gene expressions of fruits and vegetables at postharvest stage. Cell wall softening, which directly affects the decrease in fruit firmness, involves the action of cell wall degrading enzymes such as pectin methyl esterase (PME). In this study, we investigated the effect of EF treatment on cell wall strength of green bell pepper (GBP) fruit at postharvest stage. GBP fruits were stored in an incubator set at 10°C for up to 12 days with and without alternative current (AC) EF (2 kV m-1) environment. Gene expression of PME1, firmness, and ascorbic acid content were measured before (day 0) and on 4, 8, and 12 days in storage. The firmness of control sample decreased in 12 days. However, EF treated samples maintained the firmness even after 12 days in storage, and also observed significantly lower level of PME1 gene expression. These results suggested that storage under EF conditions has a possibility for delaying the degradation of pectin. DOI: 10.17660/ActaHortic.2024.1404.57 Scopus

Acta Horticulturae13362022 · 記述言語: 日本語 出版者・発行元: Acta Horticulturae This study was conducted to determine the effect of electric field (EF) treatment on improving postharvest quality and storage life of tomatoes, as well as to measure the polygalacturonase (PG) enzyme activity and the related gene expression. The fruit was continuously treated with alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) of field strength at 20 V cm-1until 3 weeks of storage at 10°C. While the fruit kept in an EF environment with target AC and DC at 0 V was served as a control. Tomato fruit were sampled during storage on weeks 1, 2 and 3 for evaluating skin color, firmness, weight loss, total acidity, pH, total soluble solids (TSS), sugar-acid ratio, ascorbic acid, and PG activity. The result showed that AC-EF treatment improved the firmness and L∗ value of tomato fruit throughout 3 weeks of storage. In conclusion, AC-EF had the potential to be used to extend the shelf-life and to suppress the PG expression level of tomato fruit. DOI: 10.17660/ActaHortic.2022.1336.22 Scopus
