Although recent findings suggest that standing stocks of mesozooplankton are not low and provide good prey availability for fish larvae, no information is available at their prey quality. Here, we investigated the spatial and temporal variations in the fatty acid content of mesozooplankton communities from transect lines across the Kuroshio to evaluate the nutritional quality of mesozooplankton as prey for fish larvae. We identified 5 saturated fatty acids (SFAs), 4 mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and 13 poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the mesozooplankton community. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that fatty acid contents in mesozooplankton dry mass were more variable between the seasons than at the sites, with increasing SFA in summer. Long-chain PUFA (LC-PUFA) content, represented by arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic, and docosahexaenoic acids, was comparable between the Kuroshio and its neighboring waters. These LC-PUFA contents exhibited significant positive correlations with the relative abundance of Eucalanidae copepods and molluscans determined with metabarcoding analysis. These contents were also positively correlated with the fatty acid content of the haptophyte biomarker. Beaked sandfish larvae had higher LC-PUFA contents than those of Anguilliformes leptocephali. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the fatty acid composition of omnivorous crustaceans, such as decapods and Eucalanidae copepods, was synchronized with that of beaked sandfish larvae. These findings suggest that the LC-PUFA contents of mesozooplankton communities accumulate in omnivorous crustaceans feeding on nano- to micro-sized phytoplankton and are transferred to planktivorous fish larvae. Aquaculture systems typically consist of components such as ropes, cages, and cultivated seaweed itself. Each component possesses distinct characteristics and attributes, potentially influencing its function as a habitat. However, limited research has explored the differences in habitat provision among these various components. We conducted a field experiment to assess the habitat function of a seaweed aquaculture system involving a red alga Solieria pacifica, comparing the effects of ropes, cages, and cultured seaweed. Three treatments were tested: (1) a rope suspended without additional structure, (2) a rope suspended with an empty cage, and (3) a rope suspended with a cage containing cultured seaweed, representing the typical aquaculture setup. In all the treatments and sampling months, epifaunal assemblages are generally predominated by tube-dwelling amphipod crustaceans. Epifaunal abundance and diversity were significantly greater in the treatment with the rope and empty cage compared to the rope-only treatment, suggesting that cages provide an important habitat for epifauna. Interestingly, there was no significant difference in epifaunal diversity or assemblage structure between treatments with and without cultured seaweed. Furthermore, epifaunal abundance was higher in the absence of seaweed, indicating that cultured seaweed had limited habitat function and may even deter some epifauna. This case study offers valuable insights, demonstrating that structurally complex cages can provide more significant habitats for epifauna than the cultivated seaweed itself, highlighting an important consideration in aquaculture design. Even pesticides applied in inland agricultural areas can be transported via rivers and have often been detected in marine environments. Pesticides would disturb not only the ecosystems around agricultural areas but also marine ecosystems, and there is a growing need for research on how pesticides affect marine environments. Recently, several pesticides have been detected at high concentrations in the coastal areas of Ishigaki Island, Japan, where seagrasses and seaweeds form important macrophyte bed ecosystems. To elucidate the effects of pesticides on the macrophyte bed epifauna, a field survey was conducted in the intertidal seaweed-seagrass mixed beds in Ishigaki Island. As a result of the survey, several pesticides were detected, including the highly toxic insecticide fipronil. The epifaunal abundance, taxon richness and Shannon's diversity index (H′) were all negatively and significantly correlated with fipronil concentration. Crustaceans were found to be more affected by fipronil than molluscs. Abundance, taxon richness and H′ of crustaceans were negatively correlated with fipronil concentration, whereas those of molluscs were not. The alteration and decline of epifaunal assemblages by pesticides may lead to a loss of the ecological functions and resilience of macrophyte bed ecosystems. This study demonstrates the disturbance of epifauna by discharged pesticides in in situ coastal macrophyte bed ecosystems. Pesticides appear to disturb a much wider range of ecosystems than previously considered, and accordingly may require a reconsideration of pesticide use and discharge in the future. Despite of the potential risk for survival and growth, early life stages of various fishes appear abundantly in the Kuroshio and its neighboring waters. Here, we report what kind of taxonomic groups establish community structure of larval fishes in the Continental shelf waters (CW) and the Kuroshio (KW). 16 orders and 78 families were classified in the present study. Mesopelagic fishes more abundantly appeared in the KW than in the CW, while larval fish abundance was not different between the two areas. Multivariate analysis demonstrated the regional difference of the taxonomic compositions, represented by Callionymidae, Bothidae, Labridae and Bregmacerotidae for the CW and Gonostomatidae, Myctophidae and Notosudidae for the KW. Abundance of fish larvae to ambient salinity exhibited significantly positive correlations for Gonostomatidae, Sigmops gracilis and Myctophum orientale predominated in the KW and negative correlations for Labridae appeared abundantly in the CW. These results suggest that mixture of advected specimens from the coastal and Kuroshio waters also contribute to larval fish community with high biodiversity and comparable abundance between the Kuroshio and its neighboring waters.
