- ハマサンゴの光制御下での長期飼育実験:―骨格炭素同位体比と共生藻光合成の相関解析―2011 · 熱帯から温帯の浅海域に広く生息している造礁サンゴは, 水温や水質, 光などの環境要因に鋭敏に応答する. 特に, 骨格に形成される年輪様構造や骨格中の元素の組成比・同位体比は, 生育環境により大きく変動することが知られている. 我々は, 炭素同位体比に影響を与える環境要因の解明を目的として, 約500日間に及ぶハマサンゴの飼育実験を行なった. 共生藻の光合成活性に直接関わる光条件 (強度と日長) を変えて飼育し, 飼育期間中に形成された骨格の炭素同位体比 (δ<sup>13</sup>C) について光条件や共生藻の光合成色素量などとの相関を解析した. ここでは, これらの研究を進める過程で開発してきたハマサンゴの飼育法や各種の実験手法を中心に報告する.
- 石垣島宮良湾の裾礁礁池における塊状ハマサンゴの分布特性2000 · The spatial distribution and morphologies of massive <i>Porites</i> colonies were investigated over a large area (1100m×200m) in the sandy moat of Miyara fringing reef, Ishigaki Island, Japan. Massive <i>Porites</i> (diameter>50cm) showed a preferential distribution for deeper depths (i. e., 2 to 3m). This distribution pattern suggested that massive <i>Porites</i> colonies were transported to deeper more stable habitats, as “mobile colonies”. Twenty-three percent of the colonies were mushroom shaped, with narrow stems attached to the substratum. Significant portions of mushroom shaped colonies (69%) were dislodged and 66% of them were tilted toward the dominant direction of water flow. The mushroom morphologies appear related to the high mobility of sandy sediments around the colonies, which interferes with ordinary growth of the colony base. Mobile colonies seems important for maintaining local coral populations in sandy habitats, which are often unsuitable habitats for larval settlement. In this case, physical environmental factors, such as water movement and micro-geomorphology, influence the distribution and population structure of coral communities in the sandy shallow habitats.
