JT is not simply a company that sells cigarettes in Japan. It is one of the world's three largest tobacco manufacturers and a diversified multinational group that also operates pharmaceuticals through Torii Pharmaceutical and processed foods through TableMark. Its overseas tobacco business is operated by Geneva-based JTI, approximately 70% of tobacco sales come from overseas, and Winston, Mevius, formerly Mild Seven, and Camel are among its major global brands. Privatized in 1985 from the Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation, JT remains legally subject to government ownership of approximately one-third of its shares through the Minister of Finance. For fiscal year 2024, the year ended December, consolidated revenue was approximately JPY 3.0567 trillion, and approximately 90% of earnings came from the tobacco business.
