SUMCO provides the 'foundation' of semiconductors. It is a major global producer of silicon wafers, ranking among the market leaders and second only to Shin-Etsu Handotai. Every semiconductor chip is built on a silicon wafer, and SUMCO makes this underlying ultra-high-purity material. It is a critical upstream materials company in the semiconductor supply chain, and its performance fluctuates significantly with semiconductor market conditions. Its fiscal year ends in December.
