The 5 application windows international students miss most

What to watch isn't the exam date itself. Two-layer deadlines, independent score-submission deadlines, ultra-short windows, qualification checks that run before you can apply, and advisor-sign-off fields on the research plan — miss these and a strong applicant never gets to apply.

The fields to actually watch

The report's conclusion: don't watch the exam date — watch these six.

  1. 01Guideline-release monthUntil it's out, exact dates are unknown; most finalize in spring to early summer.
  2. 02Qualification-check deadlineSome applicants must pass an eligibility check well before the application window.
  3. 03External-score submission deadlineTOEFL/GRE often have a separate submission deadline — work back from test and send dates.
  4. 04Online application deadlineThe web-registration/fee deadline — sometimes a different day from the document-arrival deadline.
  5. 05Paper-document arrival deadline"Must arrive" is not postmark-based — mail early, allowing for delivery time.
  6. 06Advisor pre-contact / acceptance consentSome schools require a consent letter or sign-off field — leave time to reach the professor.
