This subject tests not how much grammar you know but whether you can process academic Japanese under time pressure. 聴解の形式
In this section the options are not printed but spoken, which raises the memory load sharply.
Compress the passage's point into one sentence.
Compare each spoken option against that sentence.
Commit as soon as one matches.
Since the options are also heard, judge while listening; recalling afterwards is generally too late.
設問の聞き取り
The question comes before or after the passage, and which it is changes how you listen.
Establish where the question is played.
If it comes first, narrow what you are listening for.
If it comes last, note the people, the time, and the outcome.
A question first lets you listen with a target; a question last requires full comprehension, where notes matter most.
話者の立場
In dialogues the two speakers often disagree, and attributing a remark to the wrong person is the commonest error.
Establish how many speakers there are and who is who.
Record each speaker's position in its own column.
Before answering, confirm which speaker the question is about.
Splitting your notes into two columns by speaker prevents mix-ups better than recording content alone.
否定と訂正の聞き取り
Expressions like 〜ではなく, 〜じゃなくて, and やっぱり overturn what was just said.
Prepare to revise your notes on hearing a negation.
Strike through what has been overturned.
Take the final statement as authoritative.
In dialogue items the answer usually lies after the correction, so answering from the first half almost always fails.
時間・数量の聞き取り
Meeting times, headcounts, and amounts recur constantly — and are usually changed mid-conversation.
Write down every number.
Strike through any number that gets changed.
Answer with the number finally agreed.
The first number is rarely the answer: a proposal is typically revised, so listen to the end.
話し言葉の縮約形
Contractions such as 〜ちゃう, 〜とく, and 〜なきゃ are scarce in textbooks yet abundant in dialogue items.
Map thirty common contractions to their full forms.
Confirm how each sounds in real conversational audio.
Practice not stalling when one appears.
A missed contraction loses the whole sentence — the crucial gate between textbook Japanese and real listening.
