Statement of purpose review
Statement of purpose review report
Bring a finished statement of purpose and have it read with an admissions reviewer's eyes: per-criterion scoring, inline comments, and revisions you can apply directly.
- You provideThe full text of your finished statement and the program you are applying to.
- The tool doesScores it on four criteria, points out problems paragraph by paragraph, and offers rewrites you can use as-is.
- You getA review report: overall assessment, per-criterion scores, inline comments, and a repair order.
Overall assessment
66/ 100
- The motivation rests on first-hand experience and reaches a concrete observation (students diverge under the same materials; the teaching side cannot see it) — far more persuasive than stated enthusiasm.
- The academic background is selected rather than listed: three items (statistics, programming, a log-visualisation project) that connect directly to the research interest.
- The Japanese is stylistically consistent and free of errors — it is at submission level.
Main issues
- Section 4 contains nothing specific to this graduate school — it survives a school-name swap, which is the fatal one.
- The research interest stops at “analysing logs yields insights” and never narrows into an answerable question.
- The post-graduation plan is disconnected from the research: the essay discusses revising materials, then closes with “get a job and contribute to society”.
How admissions will read it
Reading section 4, an admissions reader will most likely think: “this paragraph would work anywhere, wouldn't it?” Checking that against the program's actual curriculum and body of research is exactly the part a general-purpose AI cannot do for you.
Per-criterion scores
The opening is strong: not “I am passionate about education” but a scene you can picture, plus a diagnosis (the teaching side has no way to detect where students get stuck). Points are lost where section 1 closes and slides back into boilerplate.
The fatal dimension here. Nothing in the essay applies only to this program: no course structure, no seminar, no empirical project you could join, and no account of which line of work here connects to your direction. This is the admissions reader's first filter and the one a general AI cannot help with — it does not know what this program contains.
The first four sections are about finding difficulty in learning logs and revising materials; section 5 jumps to “get a job and contribute to society”. The missing step is what the learning here concretely turns into.
Register is consistent, there are no grammatical breakdowns, plain and polite forms are not mixed, and the terminology is used correctly. It is at submission level. A few passages run long, but revising them is optional.

Inline comments
The statement under review
1. Motivation
2. Academic background
3. Research interest
4. Why this graduate school
5. Plans after graduation
This paragraph survives a school-name swap
“Highly regarded, excellent facilities, outstanding faculty” applies to every university with an educational-technology program. This section should be the least substitutable part of the essay; right now it is the most.
Why it mattersWhat the reader is looking for here is whether you actually know this program. Generic praise communicates the opposite — that you did not look. It is the most common and most avoidable way to lose points.
How to fix itWrite two things only someone who researched could write: one seminar course you want to take (and which of your gaps it closes) and one existing empirical research thread here (and where it meets your interest). Verify names and content against the program site and the current admissions guidelines.
The research interest is not yet a question
“Logs record a great deal of behaviour, and analysing them would yield useful insights” describes a field, not a question. A reader cannot tell from it what you would do for two years.
Why it mattersA statement of purpose does not require a finalised research plan, but it does show whether you can narrow an interest into a question. Stopping at “analysis would yield something” reads as not yet thought through.
How to fix itNarrow it to something answerable. Section 1 already supplies the raw material (the teaching side cannot see where students struggle), so continuing from there works.
The closing plan is disconnected from everything before it
Four sections discuss revising materials, then this one switches to employment, contribution, and bridging two countries' education systems. None of the three connects back.
Why it mattersThe final section is where a reader confirms whether you have thought this through. When it does not join up, the concreteness built earlier gets discounted too.
How to fix itMake it the continuation of the research: say who ultimately receives what you build and which of their problems it solves.
The opening's concreteness is diluted by its last line
Quoted
A genuinely persuasive observation is immediately followed by “drawn to the educational environment of your graduate school”, which folds it back into boilerplate.
Why it mattersThe end of section 1 is where the first impression settles. Closing on boilerplate hands back the credit the paragraph just earned.
How to fix itClose on the problem awareness that grew out of the observation, and save remarks about the school for section 4.
What works well
The motivation lands on a scene you can picture
Instead of “I am passionate about education”, it describes how students diverge under identical materials and how invisible that is from the teaching side.
Anyone can write abstract enthusiasm; only someone who was actually there writes a specific observation. This is the most valuable asset in the essay.
Keep thisKeep the pattern: scene first, then the problem you saw in it. Section 4 is missing exactly this kind of specificity.
The academic background is selected, not listed
All three items (statistics, programming, the visualisation project) connect directly to the research interest, with no unrelated coursework padding.
The selection itself demonstrates that you know what you want to do — more informative than listing ten courses.
Keep thisKeep applying the same filter: include only what relates to your direction.
Repair order
Rewrite section 4 into something only you could have written
As it stands, a school-name swap sends it elsewhere. This is the admissions reader's first filter and the fastest place to separate yourself from other applicants.
Suggested action: From the program site and the current admissions guidelines, pick one course you want to take and one existing research thread, and write two sentences on each: what it is, and which of your gaps it closes.
Narrow the research interest into an answerable question
“Analysis would yield insights” is a field, not a question. Section 1 already holds the material, so continuing from it works.
Suggested action: Write one sentence in the form “I want to clarify which patterns act as early signals of difficulty” and use it to replace the end of section 3.
Reconnect the post-graduation plan to the research
Section 5 is currently detached. Adding the step of who receives what you build reconnects it.
Suggested action: Replace “contribute to society” with a concrete role and its actual work, and state that it continues this research.
