The first step on the graduate-school route is not picking a school or memorizing vocabulary — it is thinking 'why Japan' through until the answer survives being questioned. Research study abroad is an investment measured in years; if the motivation is shaky, the language work, professor outreach, and research plan that follow will be torn up and redone again and again — and outreach emails and interviews will press you on exactly this question. What this stage is for: separate 'want' from 'need', place Japan honestly against your other options, and only then decide whether it deserves two years of your life.

Produce one sentence that survives questioning
