In Japan's official framing, the college of technology (kōsen / KOSEN) is '5-year integrated' engineering education for middle-school graduates: general and specialized subjects interleaved (officially the 'wedge' model), heavy on experiments and practicums, training hands-on engineers — institutionally neither a high school, nor a junior college, nor a vocational-school specialized course. Completing the 5-year main course confers the title 'jun-gakushi' (Associate Degree), and a 2-year advanced course (senkōka) can follow. MEXT explicitly places KOSEN under the School Education Act like universities, with establishment requiring the education minister's approval. So reading KOSEN as 'Japan's high school + junior college' scrambles the institutional class, the graduation title, the progression rights, and the transfer eligibility all at once — this step only helps you see which stage KOSEN occupies and its early-engineering-entrance nature, with no 'should I attend' conclusion; course structure, associate-degree conferral, and advanced-course linkage each [verify].

KOSEN's official character has long pointed at one thing — engineering, experiments, practice, and graduation research embedded from an early stage — making it the 'most STEM-leaning early entrance', fitting best students with a clear technical direction who want into Japan's engineering training early; conversely it suits poorly those with a vague direction treating study abroad as a generic option, because coursework enters engineering training early and later flexibility to pivot out of STEM is usually below the ordinary high-school-to-university chain. Also, for international students the typical way in is not year-1 admission but 'upper-year transfer' (the concrete paths differ — see the next block).
