Milestones
This stage
Decide first whether the senmonshi title is the destination or a springboard into university transfer; the qualification is granted by the state, but the receiving year is set by the university.
Finish a vocational school and the 'senmonshi / advanced senmonshi' you earn is already an employment-oriented credential in its own right; MEXT at the same time names it explicitly as one of the statutory qualifications for 'transfer admission into university' — but that is not an automatic channel where 'having attended a vocational school naturally means you can transfer'. This step only helps you judge: is the senmonshi your endpoint (go straight to work / change residence status), or your springboard (transfer on into university for a bachelor's)? The two exits differ completely in materials, selection, and years. See it clearly first: the statutory qualification is granted by the state, but whether you can transfer, into which year, and how many credits count is decided by each receiving university itself. The concrete year placement and conversion caps differ per school [verify].
| Dimension | Senmonshi → employment | Senmonshi → university transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Final credential | Senmonshi / advanced senmonshi | University bachelor's |
| Next step | Residence-period renewal / change → work | Transfer selection → year 2/3 |
| Credits already earned | No further use | Credit recognition can be requested (with caps [verify]) |
| Years in school | Ends with the completed vocational course | Continues after transfer through the remaining credits to the bachelor's [verify] |
