Not another road — the 'no-offer fork' of the D1 job-hunt main line
Official materials place 'offer in hand before graduation' and 'still no offer at graduation' on one and the same student-to-work transition line; the fork sits only in whether a firm offer / landing exists at the moment of graduation, and whether a gap separates the start date from graduation. An offer before graduation with a later start date usually points to 'Designated Activities (offer holder)' or a direct change to a work status; still offer-less at graduation but wanting to keep hunting in Japan is what this route's 'Designated Activities (continued job hunting)' covers. The job-hunt moves themselves (industry-company research / entries / written exams and interviews) are not told here — the D1 canvas is reused; this block only answers 'should I switch from D1 to D2'.

Graduation ≠ leave at once — but 'Student' cannot be stretched either
The official Q&A is explicit: once a student graduates from the enrolling institution, they no longer perform the activity 'Student' covers, so staying on by 'renewing Student' is out; to keep hunting after graduation, move into 'Designated Activities' promptly. Likewise, a student's blanket work-permission (shikakugai katsudō kyoka) is valid only while enrolled — after graduation, even with time left on the residence card, working on the old student part-time logic is no longer allowed. What decides whether you must leave is not 'graduation' itself but whether you switched in time to a lawful residence status matching the next stage's activity.
High-risk profiles: the bridge does not always build
- Non-regular students usually fall outside the ordinary post-graduation job-hunt bridge (stated on official pages of the University of Tokyo, Kanazawa University, and others) [verify per school].
- A school unwilling to issue the recommendation, or near-zero job-hunt evidence before graduation, strips the application of its key support.
- Overtime part-time work, long stretches away from the primary activity, or tax / social-insurance / notification defects in the residence record count as negative factors in screening.
